If women were men (A Short Play)

Mabel and Sandra are friends. Mabel is Ken's younger sister; Sandra is in a relationship with Ken. Sandra pays Mabel a visit.  Comfortably sited and excited, Sandra, an extroverted individual, opens a conversation as Mabel gets some snacks and two bottles of fruit drinks to the table. Mabel takes a bite of the meat-pie snack as she listens to what Sandra has to say....

                         Ken                 Lead Character

                         Mabel                Sister

                        Sandra         Girlfriend

Sandra (Chuckles, looks at the snacks on the table): I'm happy I'm not a man!

Mabel (Stunned, curious, unable to take the second bite): What?

Sandra (looks at Mabel, takes her bite of fish-roll snack): Friend, it's amazing seeing men do the work for us, women.

Mabel: You're quite funny, you know. Are you trying to say my elder brother is your living ATM machine?

Sandra (laughs, takes the second fish-roll bite): I have to flipp the script. Aren't you milking Bob dry?

Mabel (Infuriated): You're talking about my elder brother, my only brother on earth. Don't say such a thing again!

Sandra: Oh well ... You're a Bob's resource-extracting machine!

Mabel: How is that your business, Sandra?

Sandra: Your brother is my boyfriend. You know I love him (chuckles, gives Sandra a wink)

Mabel: You want to make me angry. I refuse to!

Sandra: You obviously are! Your tone is it all

(Sandra comfortably takes more bites of  snacks. She ignores Mabel's stern look and pointing finger)

Are You aware I bought those snacks and fruit drinks?

Mabel: You bought these for us and for consumption. I'm only doing justice to the consumables! Your brother does it better!

Sandra: You're making me upset. Don't test me!

(Sandra is on her feet, issues a stern warning)

Mabel, I don't want to sound mean. Respect the set boundaries!

Sandra (jokes): Hmmm....Did Bob's sister tell you this?

Mabel: That's a different ball game all together. Ken is my brother.  He is my only brother!

Sandra: You're the very one that would say, "Do to others what you want them to do to you"

Mabel: Not my brother!

Sandra: Ha!!!! Mabel, you are a typical example of "Do as I say but don't do as I do!"

Mabel: That's your cup of tea. Just wondering how Ken would fall in love with you in the first place!

Sandra: Just as Bob chose to fall in love with you!

Mabel: I can see clearly my brother FEELS is in love with you but you're REALISTICALLY in business with him

Sandra: Just as you are to Bob. I guess I'm just a mirror reflection

Mabel: Bob knows I'm emotionally available to him. And that's the truth! You aren't. I know you too well

Sandra: Well, Ken knows I'm available for him. And that's the God's truth. I bet you aren't truthful! I know you.

Mabel: Why trade words with me?

Sandra: You failed to over-stand I'm happy I'm not a man!

Mabel: Are You seeing Ken as a work horse?

Sandra: He's masculine enough to be the Horse Band Material. You know what I mean

Mabel: Not under my watch! That wouldn't  happen!

Sandra: (speaking confidently):A few days ago, your brother, Ken,  actually took me out and asked, "how would you feel getting married to me?"

Mabel suddenly gets on her feet, moves around the Living Room, looks at Sandra who isn't concerned about Mabel's demeanour, looks around and stares at her

Mabel: I know it's a fallacy and that wouldn't come to pass

Sandra: I actually came to unveil the news but you chose to spoil the show!

Mabel(Quickly takes her sit): I will stop you by all means!

Sandra: I was here to unveil this good news, indeed.

Mabel: Good news? You're such a bad news. Wondered how we became friends! (Mabel looks disappointed at Sandra, shaking her head)

Sandra(laughs loudly): You sound like a pot calling kettle black! If you're wondering how we became friends, your memory would serve you right to remember...Like attracts like!

Mabel: Get behind me, oh devil. I'm not you!

Sandra: That's why we're good friends

Mabel: Good friends my foot (Sets foot against the floor)

Sandra: You're my sister-in-law in the making!

Mabel: Impossible!

Sandra: It is, my sister-in-law!

Mabel: Again, It's impossible!

Sandra: You're my sister-in-law in faith

Mabel: Not under my watch!

Sandra: You have no choice!

Mabel: Let's watch the space

Sandra s and Mabel's trade of words prevented them from hearing who is at the door. The bell rings repeatedly stops the altercation. Mabel rushes to the door, opens it. Seeing it is Ken, both women are suddenly mute. Ken stares at Mabel and Sandra in disappoinment. They have no idea Ken was eavesdropping at their conversation, all along. Sandra runs towards Ken with an open arms while Mable looks on. Ken's cold response sees Mabel's discomfort.

Ken: Sandra, you are such a disappoinment!

Sandra (shows remorse): What happened?

Ken: Sandra, I had no idea you're such a parasite!

Sandra: This is me you're taking to. I'm your girlfriend

Mabel joins  the conversation

Mabel: Sandra, can you see what you really are?

(Sandra stares at Mabel in disgust but puts a friendly gaze on Ken. Ken notices)

Ken: Look at the way you looked at my sister. That's gross!

Mabel: Can you imagine Sandra being my sister-in-law....

Sandra: Don't you believe in possibility?

Mabel: It appears you are the mosquito I've been reporting my malarias to

Sandra: We are in this together, Mabel

Mabel: Ken, can you see who your girlfriend is?

Ken looks at Mabel and Sandra in disappoinment.

Ken: Sandra, Mabel, I'm completely disappointed in you women.

Sandra: Why, my dear?

Mabel: I'm your sister!

Ken: Are You all aware I eavesdropped all conversations between both of you?

Mabel: How?

Sandra: What? I didn't expect that.

Ken: I see you're both shocked. Look at your language. Thank goodness I witnessed the truth

Sandra: I'm the truth. I'm what you seek, Ken

Ken (smiles sadistically): Indeed, you're the truth. In fact, you're such a convincing truthful liar!

Mabel: I can't wrap my head as to why Sandra is your girlfriend

Sandra: That's an important issue that Bob should be considering, given your relationship status with him

Mabel: Sandra, can you see how disappointing you are to Ken, my brother. His face says it all

Ken is seen directing his head, listening to who is talking.

Ken: Sandra, I can see I'm nothing but a living ATM machine to you.

Sandra: It's not what you think. I can explain better!

Mabel: She said men are living ATM machines. I had to let her know I won't have it easy with her on you!

Ken: Hmmm I had all your conversations. Mabel, you're just Sandra in the form of my younger sister!

Mabel (Confused): I've always been your genuine sister. Why are you taking this way?

Sandra: She's the pot calling me, the kettle, black!

Ken: Shut up, Mabel! Can you hear yourselves speak??

Sandra: I'm always for you (She falls on her knees, pleading, shedding tears). Take me for who I am. Receive me in loving arms, Ken.

Mabel: Darkness masquerading as light!

Sandra: Mabel, help me beg your brother for forgiveness. I would help beg for forgiveness when the time comes for you to settle your differences with Bob.

Mabel: Time will tell! You aren't the right woman for my brother. (She turns to him). Ken, do you know she sees you as a Horse Band Material?

Ken: I had what you said. I'm shocked beyond what words would say. Looking at Sandra on her knees suggests I've dodged a bullet!

Sandra: I'm not a fit gun. There's no bullet at all in me!

Mabel (looks at her mockingly): Are You still kneeling? You hypocrite! You are a living bullet that should be dodged by every man

Sandra: I'm still your friend! Your partner in crime!

Mabel: I was blind but now, I see! I refuse to be that partner. Get behind me, devil!!

Sandra stands on her feet, takes a tough glance at Mabel, from her head to toe, looks at Ken and back to Sandra, keeps quiet. Ken looks on anticipating her next move. Mabel is undisturbed

Ken: Sandra, do you know the relationship Is over, right here and now?

Sandra (wipes of her tears): Ken, I understand. It's your world. Sandra, it's going to be your turn!

Mabel: My turn? Till then

Ken: You said it's going to be my sister's turn. Why?

Mabel: Don't mind her. She plays mind games a lot!

Ken: I see. But Mabel, who is this Bob?

Mabel (sounding not serious): He's just a friend!

Sandra: Mabel, tell Ken the truth!

Ken: I know the truth...I mentioned  you're just Sandra in the form of my sister

Mabel: What?

Ken: Yes, you heard me right!

Mabel: I'm your only sister.

Ken: Do you know I'm friends with Michael, Bob's younger brother?

Mabel: Goodness me!

Ken: Yes!

Sandra: Mabel, if you had let me land as to why I said, "if women were to be men, we wouldn't arrive at..."

Ken: what??

Sandra: Never mind. The relationship between us is over. What you heard from us is true about us! I have to take my leave. In case you don't know, I'm still friends with Michael. Mabel, I will tell Michael the truth about you!

Mabel: Do your worse! Nothing will happen! Bob and I can't be taken away from each other!

Ken: Hmmmm.... women!

Mabel: I understand. It's a contest between Sandra and I! Don't worry, Ken!

Sandra: Thank you, Ken, for the time we get been together. I hope you will find in your heart to pardon me and forgive your sister....

Sandra departs their presence: takes a few steps to the door and smashes it hard. Ken looks at Mabel. Mabel stares back.

Mabel: Why would you talk about me to Sandra like that?

Ken: Who are you?

Mabel: Your only sister

Ken: What I heard from you is just a reflection of who Sandra is

Mabel: You shouldn't say that

Ken: What else do you expect me to say?

Mabel: Good things!

Ken checks his wrist watch

Ken: I need to catch up on some things. Let me bathe, rest, freshen up and prepare for an appointment in the next four hours

Ken directs his movement to his bedroom while Mabel, akimbo-positioned,  watches him leave.

       The End.
